Characteristic
25,056 km2; The largest national park in South-East Asia. One of the most ecologically diverse national parks in the world. It is the only protected area in the world to incorporate a continuous, intact transect from snowcap to tropical marine environment, including extensive lowland wetlands. The highest point, Puncak Jaya (4,884 m high) is the tallest mountain between the Himalayas and the Andes. Lorentz Park contains many unmapped and unexplored areas, and is certain to contain many species of plants and animals as yet unknown to Western science. The park provides evidence of highly developed endemism in both plants and animals, especially for the higher altitudes of the mountains. Typical ecosystems: sea and sea coast, coral reefs, mangroves and tidal biotopes, wetlands and swamps (up to 50 km from the sea), freshwater ecosystems (rivers and lakes), lowland rain forest, mountain and cloud forests, alpine meadows and tundra.
