Southeast Java, 97 km southwest of Banyuwangi
Access
Quite difficult. The trip from Banyuwangi to Meru Betiri will take between 4.5 – 5 hours - only by 4x4 vehicle.
Characteristic
580 km2; Mostly terrestrial, small part is marine national park. Generally hilly to mountainous area. From a plain coast to highlands with an altitude of almost 1,200 meters - the tallest mountain is Mt. Betiri 1192 m. The Meru Betiri area is influenced by monsoon wind. Typical ecosystems: sea and sea coast, mangroves, swamps, tropical rain forest and several more open savannah-like areas.
Fauna + Flora
Meru Betiri National Park is known as the last habitat of the Javan Tiger which is now considered extinct, with the last sighting having been recorded in 1976.
