West Tanzania; 16 km north of Kigoma

Access

Easy. From Kigoma, local lake-taxis take up to three hours to reach Gombe, or motorboats can be chartered, taking less than one hour.

Characteristic

52 km2, The smallest of all Tanzania national parks. Hilly region with steep valleys of the northern shore of Lake Tanganyika in the altitude of 750 – 1 500 m. Typical ecosystems: rain (gallery) forest, savannah, freshwater ecosystems (13 rivers, many streams and waterfalls, Tanganyika Lake).

Walking along the lake shore, trek into the forest to view the chimpanzees

Note

The park is most famous as the location where Jane Goodall pioneered her behavioral research conducted on the chimpanzee populations.
